Every Spider-Man Costume Ever!

EVERY SPIDER-MAN COSTUME EVER!
August 19, 2012

The Classic Costume - The one and only classic Spider-Man look: Red & Blue, sometimes Red and Black costume with spider on front and back with webbing all around the red parts of the costume. This was Peter Parker's first costume after his wrestling costume he wore in Amazing Fantasy #15 and every time he went on to change his look, it wasn't long before he went back to the tried and true classics!

Here are some looks of the classic costumes:

Apart from artistic interpretations, the Classic Spider-Man costume has been relatively consistent looking throughout it's many years. The details most deviated from concerning his costume have been the webbing under his arms and the size and shape of his eyes in his mask.

About that webbing under his arms: Here is the Classic look by the great Spider-Man artist Steve Ditko. He displays much larger webs under Spider-Man's arms that has changes from artist to artist and from time to time. Sometimes the webbing was smallish to not even present to the other extreme of it having a visual impact of spanning a wide area from his wrists to his waist.

Another minor variant on the Classic Red and Blue is when the Blue parts of the costume was replaced with Black parts. Some artists such as Erik Larsen and John Byrne have used this variation from time to time. Artistic tastes are the number one reason for changes in Spider-Man's costumes since the beginning.

Alterations - Here is a look at Spider-Man's costumes that are just altered in one way or another. The alteration can be either cosmetically or it can serve a purpose with the prominent alteration being that of the fan favorite black costume in either the alien or non-alien form.

Alien Symbiote Black Costume

The costume that was heralded as Spider-Man's new costume back in Amazing Spider-Man #252...The costume made it's debut in Secret Wars #8 as Spider-Man on the Beyonder's planet during the Secret Wars. Spider-Man tried to replace his costume with a new one from an alien device that created new costumes...Well, he used the wrong one and an alien black substance formed over his body becoming a "costume". The Alien Black costume was able to produce it's own unlimited webbing and it wasn't until Amazing Spider-Man #258 that it was realized that the costume was alien in nature with help from Reed Richards. The costume broke free from containment and went on to take on it's first host, an unnamed man from Indiana in Spectacular Spider-Man #99. It eventually met it's "master" in Eddie Brock and later went on to become part of Venom when bonded with Brock.

Regular Black Costume

Spectacular Spider-Man #99 was the issue that featured the 1st non-alien black costume sewn by the Black Cat for Spider-Man to wear. He resisted at first stating he got the "Heebie Jeebies" thinking about the alien one, but had to wear it out of necessity in Amazing Spider-Man #263 when his regular costume was still not dry from being cleaned in a sink. He went on to wear both the black and regular costumes until the alien one came back to his closet cataloguing as the sewn costume...That relationship ended in Web Of Spider-Man #1 before the alien costume went on to bond with Eddie Brock becoming Venom. Peter also ceased wearing the sewn black costume due to his wife Mary Jane's fear of it and Venom.

Spider Armor

Spider-Man wore this costume in only one issue, Web Of Spider-Man #100, and one issue only. Peter created the armor to aid him in defeating the New Enforcers in that issue. It helped protect himself from Plant Man's mutant spores as well as from extreme temperature blasts wielded by Dragon Man, Eel, and Thermite. It hasn't been seen since that issue.

Ninja Spidey

Spider-Man added some rags to his costume to patch up some very torn parts of his costume in Spectacular Spider-Man #213 & #214. It gave him the appearance, at least somewhat of a ninja while battling Typhoid Mary/ Bloody Mary in those issues.

Insulated Spidey

Another one issue appearance, Amazing Spider-Man #425, showcased Spider-Man in his thermal, Insulated costume that helped take some of the impact from a much more powerful Electro and his electric blasts...This costume is quite reminiscent of the one he wore in Spectacular Spider-Man #66 where he used an old rubber air-mattress to create his first insulated costume against, of course, Electro!

Cyborg Spidey

two issue appearance, Spider-Man #21 & #22, where a man named Oscar McDonnell gave Spider-Man a cyborg cast while his arm had a hairline fracture. It gave him full function while allowing it to heal at an accelerated rate in the middle of the Revenge Of The Sinister Six storyline.

Octo-Spidey

Near the end of Funeral For An Octopus #2, Spider-Man began to wear the harness that Otto Octavius wore as Doctor Octopus. He could hardly control the arms becoming wildly off-balance until he broke free of the harness in Funeral For An Octopus #3. He has yet to wear them again.

Unlimited

From the pages of Webspinners #13 & 14, Spider-Man was introduced to a new costume that resembled the one in the animated series. The story featured Spider-Man and Negative Zone Dusk battling Carnage and Blastaar in the Negative Zone. It also saw the return of the Carnage Symbiote to Cletus Kasady after their return to Earth.

Homemade - When Spider-Man needed a costume and he didn't have one readily available...So what did he do? Lets find out:

Wrestler

Peter Parker's first costume, used in Amazing Fantasy #15, saw Peter used some sort of mask to cover his identity while trying to win the $100 prize money for staying in the ring three minutes with Crusher Hogan...After he won the money, he knew he had to create a costume and thus the Red & Blue/ Black classic costume was born.

Costume Shop

Spider-Man needed a costume and badly in Amazing Spider-Man #26 and he got one from a costume shop before battling the Crimemaster and the Green Goblin...It didn't quite fit as you can see!

Costume Shop II

Spider-Man's mask was taken off while battling Doctor Octopus in Amazing Spider-Man #113...The mask was later retrieved by Randy Robertson who later gave to his father Joe and it then got into the hands of J. Jonah Jameson at the Daily Bugle...Spidey needed a mask, so back to the costume shop he went where he found a Spider-Man mask with no eye coverings...His eyes looked like someone penciled them in for that issue and #114 where he battled Hammerhead and he also wore an exo-skeleton formerly worn by Doc Ock.

Bag-Man

Amazing Spider-Man #258 is the issue where Spidey found out that the black costume was alive and alien in nature...It was also an issue where he didn't have a costume while it was being tested by Mister Fantastic, so with the help of the Human Torch, he had a temporary new one: A classic Fantastic Four costume with a brown paper bag for a "mask"...Of course, this costume didn't last very long at all until he adorn the ole paper bad once more in Spectacular Spider-Man #256

Black Scarlet Spider

In the middle of the Mark Of Kaine storyline, Peter used the remnants of his old Black costume to create a makeshift costume in Spider-Man #58...It looked like a combination of the Scarlet Spider costume and the Black costume.

Transformations - This is basically a case where it's not exactly the costume but more of the person inside the costume making a change...Peter Parker has been through many different physical changes in his career as Spider-man and here are the most prominent ones:

Six Arm Spidey

Spider-Man grew four extra arms at the end of the infamous Amazing Spider-Man #100 where Peter tried to create a potion that would make him normal once again...After taking it, Peter had some hallucinations then was surprised to learn that he grew the four extra limbs...He went on to battle Morbius in Amazing Spider-Man #101 with the Lizard joining in on the fun in Amazing Spider-Man #102...The extra arms were all gone by the end of the trilogy.

Spider-Hulk

In the midst of battling the Hulk in Web Of Spider-Man #69, Spider-Man was zapped with a Biokinetic Energy Absorber that was in the same vicinity as the Incredible Hulk...Of course this meant huge quantities of Gamma Radiation was present and Spidey went on to Smash!...At least temporarily in Web Of Spider-Man #70!

Spider-Carnage

After battling Carnage in Amazing Spider-Man #410, Ben Reilly was shocked to learn that Carnage vanished in the middle of a huge rumble...He found him later in that issue and yet another battle ensued that ended with a much larger shock to Mr. Reilly: The Symbiote that bonded with Cletus Kasady took a liking to Reilly and thus Spider-Carnage was born!...Ben fought to regain control of himself in Spider-Man #67and it wasn't until Spectacular Spider-Man #233 that he broke free of it's control and returned once again to Kasady.

Spider-Lizard

At the end of Spectacular Spider-Man #39 Spider-Man turned into a Lizard like creature resembling one of his most feared foes, the Lizard...In Spectacular Spider-Man #40, it was learned that while Spider-Man was curing Curt Connors of the energy charge that turned him into the Lizard, Spider-Man absorbed radio-active feedback that affected his blood...Spider-Man was cured after Connors administered a vial of serum into his bloodstream.

Spider-Phoenix

Excalibur guest starred in Spider-Man #25 and they combined forces to combat Arcade...After administering C.P.R. to Phoenix, Spider-Man somehow gained similar powers to her and became the Spider-Phoenix...It was quickly learned that a Bio-Organic Circuitry Board was webbed to Spider-Man's back and that Arcade was behind the shenanigans experienced by all.
Cosmic Spider-Man (Captain Universe)

Spider-Man first gained cosmic powers in Spectacular Spider-Man #158 courtesy of Captain Universe...The powers were only temporary but it enabled Spider-Man to make quick work of such heavyweights as Magneto, The Hulk, Tri-Sentinel, Goliath, and others.

Copycats - Peter Parker is not here...These are costumes that are based on his costumes and worn by other individuals.

Scarlet Spider

Ben Reilly needed a new identity and a new costume and since there was the original Spider-Man still in circulation, a new Spider-Man was born...Web Of Spider-Man #118 was the landmark issue as Ben wore the homemade costume for the first time until he had to give up the identity due to the appearance of a the cybernetic Scarlet Spider in Web Of Scarlet Spider #3.

Spider-Ben

Ben Reilly's first costume all his own as Spider-man after being the Scarlet Spider for some time...It made it's debut in Sensational Spider-Man #0 while Ben was making a new identity for himself after learning that he was the true Spider-Man...Something that was later found out to be false of course.

Spider-Man 2099

Miguel O' Hara, an Engineer specializing in Genetics at Alchemax made his debut in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #365 and later starred in his own series for 46 issues based one hundred years from the regular series...The costume is different from the classic but doesn't stray TOO far from the original.

Spider-Man 2211

Who is this guy? we only have two issue appearances to find out: Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man and then Spider-Man #1/2...He is obviously yet another hero from the future that takes the Spider-Man mantle.

Spiders Man

Another mystery man made it's first appearance in the pages of the alternate future universe series Earth Xand was featured in the One-Shot Universe X Spidey...Very little in known of this character but he obviously has ties to Peter Parker.

New Costumes - Peter Parker has been around awhile...These are costumes that are based on his newer costumes and alterations...

Comic Book Movies Coming Soon!!!

COMIC BOOK MOVIES COMING SOON

Iron Man 3 (5/3/2013)

Robert Downey Jr. dons one of the heaviest superhero uniforms out there in a third installment to the Iron Man franchise. No details yet on the plot but we do know that Scarlett Johansson is back as Black Widow, which, frankly, is reason enough to hit the theaters summer 2013 to check this flick out.

The Wolverine (7/26/2013)

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" was received somewhat tepidly both at the box office and by bored fans, but there's no doubt that Hugh Jackman's take on mutant berserker Wolverine is still popular internationally. So it's no surprise that 20th Century Fox has given the go-ahead for this new sequel (or prequel… or whatever), which will take the Canadian mutant worldwide, as Logan searches for inner-balance by heading to Japan to train with ninjas. Sure, it sounds dumb when we put it like that, but the comic books this story is based on (which were done by "Sin City's" Frank Miller) added a new dimension to Wolverine's one-note personality. Should be fun to see. Hugh Jackman teams up with James Mangold. The sequel to the 2009 Origins movie will be based off the Chris Claremont/Frank Miller compilation of stories that finds Wolvie taking on The Silver Samurai.
Thor: The Dark World (11/8/2013)

Next year's second Avengers film will also steer clear of high summer, entering theaters on November 8. It will likely pick off where The Avengers ended, with Loki defeated and Thor bringing him back to Asgard. Kenneth Branagh begged off on directing this one, so the job has fallen to Alan Taylor, a veteran TV director who has worked on Sex and the City, The Sopranos, Mad Men, and most important given the film's subject matter, Game of Thrones.
Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier (4/4/2014)

This sequel kicks off the 2014 superhero season on April 4. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (who have worked on many episodes of Community and also directed the Owen Wilson comedy You, Me and Dupree), it will likely feature Cap's World War II–era best friend Bucky Barnes, who supposedly died in the first movie but came back in the comics as the titular, frigidly dubbed character.
The Amazing Spiderman 2(5/2/2014)

The Spider-Man reboot continues with a second movie that will delve into Peter Parker's past. Andrew Garfield will return as the web slinger, but that's about all that is known for now. Director Marc Webb has hinted at possibly changing a few things in Parker's past, but we'll have to wait and see what he has planned.
Gaurdians of the Galaxy (8/1/2014)

An obscure comic franchise featuring heros named Groot, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Star-Lord, and Rocket Raccoon? What's that you say, a walking tree and an alien rodent? Sold? This Marvel film comes out August 1, 2014.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014/2015)

There is word circulating that 20th Century Fox has reached out to the MPAA to secure a title for the studio’s forthcoming sequel to X-Men: First Class - and if reported accurately, that title is going to send a tidal wave of geek freak-outs across the Interwebs. The title in question is “Days of Future Past” – which remains one of the most famous and celebrated X-Men storylines of all time.
More interestingly, however: “Days of Future Past” was also a X-Men story that dealt with time travel and multiple timelines – meaning that director Matthew Vaughn and Fox could be (finally) trying to organize the convoluted continuity of the X-Men film franchise, using a tactic similar to what J.J. Abrams did with his Star Trek reboot.
Fantastic Four (2014/2015?)

Though the original two films, starring Jessica Alba and current Captain America Chris Evans, made a fair amount of bank, they weren't well received by either critics or fans. As a result, the franchise will be rebooted under the eye of director Josh Trank, who did a fine job with the found-footage, teens with superpowers film Chronicle.
Daredevil (2014?)

The Man Without Fear is prepped to return to theaters in Fox’s Daredevil reboot, which David Slade is set to direct. Rumors are already circulating about the film’s plot – which could be based on the work of comic book legend Frank Miller – and what up-and-coming actor may portray the new version of the blind vigilante onscreen.
Miller’s “Born Again” storyline redefined Daredevil during the 1980s – and now Slade may be drawing from that source material as inspiration for the reboot, which is reportedly only in the development stage at this point.
Avengers 2 (2016?)

With Joss Whedon officially signed and a release date apparently already chosen, it’s clear that Marvel Studios are getting more and more serious about The Avengers 2 every day. Fans will have to wait through "Phase 2" in order to know whats going to happen in this blockbuster sequal.
Dead pool (Rumored)

Complete reboot of Deadpool has been announced with Ryan Reynolds reprising the role of his assassin that came to a sticky end in X Men: Origins. The script is said to be R-Rated and may involve the writers of Zombieland.
Ant-Man (Rumored)

A few weeks ago at Comic Con, director Edgar Wright popped up to show recently shot test footage for this still-undated film about a superhero able to go small but stay strong. When (and if) this movie starts filming will be based on how quickly Wright can start and finish work on The World's End, the final film (following Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) in Wright's Simon Pegg/Nick Frost trilogy.

DC AND OTHERS

Dredd (9/7/2012)
In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.
Man of Steel (6/14/2013)

Zack Snyder follows up Sucker Punch by rebooting the famed Superman franchise. Henry Cavill plays the Man of Steel with Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
R.I.P.D.(6/28/2013)

Ryan Reynolds stars in his fourth comic book movie following roles in Blade: Trinity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and most recently Green Lantern. In R.I.P.D., Reynolds plays a recently slain cop who joins a team of undead police officers of the Rest in Peace Department, trying to find the man who murdered him.
Red 2 (8/2/2013)

Red was a bit of a surpirse hit last summer. The combination of Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman and a gun-toting Helen Mirren proved to be a perfect mix for box office success. So much so that a sequel has been comissioned with many of the principle characters returning for another romp.
300: Battle of Artemesia (8/2/2013)

Not many details have been revealed about this upcoming sequel to the 2006 Zack Snyder action epic, 300 which starred Gerard Butler. Rodrigo Santoro stars as Xerxes with Eva Green co-starring as Artemisia.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (10/13/2013)

Seven years after the release of the first film based on the popular and award-winning Dark Horse graphic novel series by Frank Miller, we now have an official release date for the long-awaited sequel. Sin City: A Dame To Kill For will open on October 4, 2013, as confirmed by a new teaser poster. Co-directed once again by Miller and Robert Rodriguez, the movie will adapt not just the titular story but also, in the fashion of the first film, other disparate yet interconnected tales from the comics as well as a brand new Sin City "yarn." Auspiciously, the screenplay is co-written by William Monohan, an Academy Award winner for his work on The Departed.
Kick-Ass 2 (2013)

Many comic book movie fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Kick-Ass 2 since the first film was released; still, the current outlook is less than encouraging. Kick-Ass co-writers Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman (Vaughn also directed) are passing on the followup to work on X-Men: First Class 2. Their replacement is writer/director Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down); a candidate who’s inspired more wariness than high hopes.
Justice League (Rumored)

With a current Batman series coming to a close, Green Lantern being out and an upcoming Superman film, it is only a matter of time before a Justice League film comes to fruition. Listed as 'In Development' under the name Justice League: Mortal, this could be the film that completely trounces Marvel again. However, Nolan has made it quite clear that his Batman exists in a universe entirely different from that of the other super heroes involved. This could mean an entirely different Batman to the one the films have portrayed these last few years.
The Crow (Rumored)

The Crow reboot has been through more ups and downs than a carousel horse – is raising itself from death similar to its titular vengeful spirit. No sooner than we heard that Relativity Media and the Weinstein Company’s lawsuit over the film was settled, comes word that a new director has been (re-)attached to the project, in the form of F. Javier GutiĆ©rrez, best known for the Spanish Apocalyptic drama, Before the Fall.
There are also reports that The Crow is close to snagging writer Jesse Wigutow, who is a relatively untested but fast-rising Hollywood scribe, with projects-in-the-works that include a Steve McQueen biopic and a remake of the spy-thriller The Osterman Weekend, which is based on the novel by Robert Ludlum (writer of the Jason Bourne books).
Ninja Turtles (Postponed)

There's been a lot of buzz being kicked up during the last month about Michael Bay's reboot of the Ninja Turtles franchise. As plot and casting details slowly emerge, the new Turtles movie should get off the ground sometime this year.
