Jimmy Olsen Could Be Very Different in Man of Steel
Source: ComicBookMovie.com January 22, 2013
"Rumor has it Jimmy Olsen is now Jenny Olsen. A quick search over at IMDB (Internet Movie DataBase) confirms that actress Rebecca Buller will be playing a character called Jenny Olsen," according to io9 via (ComicBookMovie.com). "And there's no mention of Jimmy. Sure, IMDB isn't always the most reliable of websites, but it's worth noting."
Many have wondered who that woman is seen running alongside Laurence Fishburne's Perry White in the most recent Man of Steel trailer, and she does look a lot like Rebecca Buller at her IMDB page.
How do you feel about Jimmy Olsen possibly being Jenny instead?
Zombieland TV Series Heading to Amazon
Source: Broadcast Now January 22, 2013
Zombieland is being developed as an original series by Amazon.com, according to Broadcast Now.
Originally rumoured to be heading to FOX, the series will apparently eschew the traditional broadcast model altogether by streaming on Amazon's instant video service. io9.com recently obtained some casting sheets from the show, which called for the return of the movie's four major characters - Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita, and Little Rock - plus two newcomers, Fred and Ainsely. The latter pair are described as 'two office workers at the start of the zombie apocalypse, obliviously complaining about problems with their iPhones and getting the wrong order at Starbucks.'
The spirit of the film is alive and well, then.
It's a terrific twist for Zombieland, which was originally conceived as a comedy TV series by writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick before it was adapted for the big screen.
First Look at Jennifer Lawrence and Sam Claflin from THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING
FIRE
Source: EW January 9, 2013
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is still 11 months
away, but there’s not a moment to lose when it comes to the marketing. The
cover of the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly features Jennifer Lawrence and Sam Claflin as Katniss and Finnick. We’ve seen the
new bodysuit uniforms in leaked set photos, and they look
good in this official image. As for Claflin, I can definitely see him as
Finnick now that they’ve dyed the actor’s hair blonde. As for his performance,
we’ll have to wait and see.
Hit the jump to check out the full cover
and the first image from the film. The film also stars Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland, Liam Hemsworth, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jena Malone, Sam
Claflin, Jeffrey Wright,
and Amanda Plummer. The Hunger Games: Catching
Fire opens November 22nd. [Update: EW has released a couple of new images,
including a new look at Hemsworth's Gale. They're included after the jump.]

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hunger Games: Catching
Fire:
THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.
Director James Mangold Talks THE WOLVERINE, How Closely the Film Follows the
Comic Book Arc, Its Relation to Other X-MEN Movies, and More
Source: EW January 9, 2013
There’s a pretty hefty round of superhero
films headed our way in 2013, with Iron Man, Superman, and Thor all set to grace
theaters with their own separate films, and many are eagerly looking forward to
the return of Hugh Jackman’s
Wolverine in the sequel The Wolverine. The film is in an odd position
because it’s not a reboot, but it’s also not closely tied to either X-Men Origins:
Wolverine or any of the other X-Men films.
A number of exciting directors flirted with
the Wolverine gig over the course of its
development, but 3:10 to
Yuma helmer James
Mangold won out in the end. The Knight and Day filmmaker recently
spoke at length about The Wolverine,
discussing how closely it follows the Chris
Claremont/Frank Miller
comics arc, its relation to the other X-Men
films, why it was important for the film to take place after the events of
X-Men: The Last
Stand, and much more. Hit the jump to see what he had to
say.
During a lengthy interview with EW, Mangold confirmed that the
film draws heavily from the Claremont/Miller storyline that finds Wolverine
wandering Japan alone:
“It’s definitely more [than sampling the vibe and some images from the comics]. A lot of that story and a lot of beats from that saga are in there — and a lot of characters. Without being religious about it, I think it’s a very admiring adaptation. Obviously when you’re adapting anything you make some changes. But all the characters are there – Yukio, Viper, Mariko, Shingen, and Logan obviously. The whole cast of characters that exist in that world exists in our film.”
As for the film’s timeline in relation to
the other X-Men films, Mangold thought it
was important for there to be some distance:
“It’s set after X-Men 3, but I wouldn’t call it a sequel to X-Men 3… [I set it after all the other films] because of some of the themes in the Claremont/Miller saga. I felt it was really important to find Logan at a moment where he was stripped clean of his duties to the X-Men, his other allegiances, and even stripped clean of his own sense of purpose. I was fascinated with the idea of portraying Logan as a ronin – the definition of which is a samurai without a master, without a purpose. Kind of a soldier who is cut loose. War is over. What does he do? What does he face? What does he believe anymore? Who are his friends? What is his reason for being here anymore? I think those questions are especially interesting when you’re dealing with a character who is essentially immortal.”
Mangold elaborated that the conclusion of
The Last Stand provided an effective end
to Logan’s tenure as a member of the X-Men:
“It was only to my advantage to set it after the X-Men films because the X-Men had effectively ended at that point. A lot of the key characters had died. There was a sense if I’m locating this film not five minutes after the other movie, but a period of time after that last X-Men movie, I can find a Logan who is living separate from the world. He is no longer a member of some superhero team.”
By setting The Wolverine apart from the other X-Men films, Mangold was able to tell the story an
emotional level as well as a physical one. In fact, he likens The Wolverine to a western or a cop movie:
“A fantasy film is often improved by some kind of human reality. What makes them hard to sit through is that the modern-day tentpole film has become a lot of fast cutting and an incredible amount of money spent generating effects. What are we left with? We’re left with what we see – a kind of inundation, a head-banging barrage in which they keep turning the volume up on the mix, and flying things at you faster in the hope that it keeps you in your seat. For me, the idea of making a film with hardcore action, with physical action like I grew up reading in the comic books, but also with a heart – and this character has great heart – to me, it’s no different from making a western. Or a cop film.”
Mangold reveals that it’s an old friendship
that first brings Logan to Japan. We already know that one X-Men castmember will be making a cameo in the
film, so that unspecified character could be what sets the story in
motion:
“What brings him there is an old ally in Japan. We find Logan in a moment of tremendous disillusionment. We find him estranged. One of the models I used working on the film was The Outlaw Josey Wales. You find Logan and his love is gone, his mentors are gone, many of his friends are gone, his own sense of purpose – what am I doing, why do I bother – and his exhaustion is high. He has lived a long time, and he’s tired. He’s tired of the pain.”
Head on over to EW to check out the full
interview, which is well worth a read. The Wolverine opens on July 26th.
Fantastic Four Reboot will include "Stuff you've never seen in a superhero movie before". I've heard that before.
Source: SciFiNow January 9, 2013
As we look forward to a number of superhero
films hitting theaters this year, there’s also plenty by way of costumed
characters heading our way in 2014 and 2015 as well. One such anticipated
property is 20th Century Fox’s reboot of Fantastic Four. The studio tapped Chronicle director
Josh Trank to take the helm, and
the project was recently given a March 2015
release date. As comics guru Mark
Millar was just hired on at Fox as their creative consultant on all things
Marvel, the talkative creative has been privy to all the in-the-works
projects, including Fantastic Four. Now
Millar has spoken up a bit about the reboot, teasing what fans can expect from
Trank’s iteration of the characters. Hit the jump to see what he had to
say.
During an interview with SciFiNow, Millar revealed that
Trank is working on contemporizing the story:
“From what I’ve seen and from talking to him – he and I have had dinner a couple of times and we talk quite regularly as well – he’s contemporizing it. I think he’s just making it work for the screen – he’s a great storyteller.”
He went on to talk about the pic’s tone,
teasing that it will include elements that have yet to grace the silver
screen:
“What I wasn’t expecting actually was just how funny and likeable he could make this as well as getting the more awesome moments on screen – I use awesome in the traditional British sense and not the California sense awesome, you know? The Ridley Scott moments, and the Fantastic Four really are jaw-dropping in the same way you feel when you saw Alien for the first time. There’s some moments in this – not to be specific – that are actually gonna be phenomenal on screen and stuff you haven’t seen in a superhero movie before.”
Hopefully we hear more about the project as
it moves closer to production. The Fantastic Four will open on March 6, 2015.
Zombieland 2 update from Director Ruben Fleischer
Source: Collider January 9, 2013
Zombies have invaded the zeitgeist like not
much else over the past few years, but undoubtedly one of the best things to
come out of this so-called “zombie craze” is director Ruben Fleischer’s 2009 comedy Zombieland. Boosted by an
incredibly strong cast, a whip-smart and funny script, excitingly refreshing
visuals from Flesicher, and one of the best cameos in recent memory, the pic
grossed over $100 million against a budget of just $23 million. Shortly after
its release, talk turned to a sequel, but development on the
follow-up has slowed considerably over the past couple of years.
Fleischer is poised to make his big budget
debut with the crime drama Gangster Squad, opening this coming Friday, and
Steve from Collider.com recently sat down with the filmmaker for an exclusive interview. During
the course of their conversation, Fleischer offered an update on Zombieland
2, revealing that there are no immediate plans for the sequel
and development stalled because they didn’t have a script that everyone was
happy with. Furthermore, Fleischer teased the storyline that they had come up
with for the follow-up. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.
Since comments from Fleischer and the cast
in recent months have been increasingly pessimistic about the prospects of Zombieland 2 coming to fruition, Steve asked
Fleischer if we could finally close the door on the follow-up:
“I hate to do it, but I can say that there’s no immediate plans to make the movie. There’s no script, really, so the likelihood of it happening is slim. But I would not wanna put a nail in that coffin.”
When asked if the studio might be more
inclined to get the sequel going now that AMC’s The Walking Dead is breaking
ratings records left and right, Fleischer revealed that it’s not the studio
that’s been stalling the film’s development:
“Well I think that the studio would be very excited to make it. It’s not that the studio is not excited, it’s that we took one shot at the script [and] it wasn’t something we all got excited to do. And just on a personal level, I was really excited to, having made one movie, to make different movies, not just go back into that world again. But now that I have some distance and I’ve done some other stuff, I would be more inclined to go back to Zombieland I guess you could say. But at the time when the talk of the sequel was really—when it felt like it was possible—I was really kind of shying away from it just because I’ve only made one movie, I wanna make different movies with different people and learn different things, and so I was a little hesitant to just jump right back into the same thing.”
Finally, Fleischer offered up a small tease
of what the plot for Zombieland 2 entailed
in that first script:
“Needless to say it was a continuation of the original story with the same characters. I guess the only thing I could really say is that the threat to our heroes wasn’t only zombies, like they encounter other people that they’re all jockeying for positions.”
Steven Spielberg's Robopocalypse postponed indefinitely!
Source: THR January 9, 2013
Lincoln director Steven Spielberg is poised to have a big day
tomorrow when the 85th Academy Awards are announced, but it appears that the
filmmaker has decided to put the brakes on his next project. Spielberg has
decided to indefinitely postpone his big budget sci-fi adaptation of Robopocalypse, which was to have
starred Chris Hemsworth in the lead
role. Production was set to get underway this spring, but apparently Spielberg
decided the project wasn’t ready and is now going “back to the drawing board to
see what is possible.” The filmmaker isn’t dropping out of the pic entirely, he
just didn’t want to rush such an expensive film.
Penned by Drew Goddard (The Cabin
in the Woods), the story of Robopocalypse takes place in a future where artificial
intelligence known as Archos comes online and assumes control over the global
network of machines that regulate everything from transportation to utilities,
defense and communication. The film was initially slated for release in July of
2013 before being pushed back to April 25, 2014, and now THR reports that the film, which
was to star Hemsworth, Anne
Hathaway, and Ben Whishaw,
is being indefinitely postponed. The filmmaker’s spokesman had this to say:
Spielberg spokesman Marvin Levy said the project was “too important and the script is not ready, and it’s too expensive to produce. It’s back to the drawing board to see what is possible.”
Spielberg will continue to develop the
project as he looks for something else to direct in the meantime. His Moses
epic Gods and
Kings is in direct competition with another Moses film from
Ridley Scott called Exodus,
and producer Dan Lin recently told
us that Gods and Kings is definitely on the
frontburner for Warner Bros, so it’s possible that Spielberg could be following
up Lincoln with a Biblical epic. Or maybe
he’s having second thoughts about Star Wars? (probably not).
This isn’t the first time Spielberg has
changed his mind on a project, and it’s well-known that it took him over a
decade to finally get Lincoln ready for
production and almost the same amount of time for Schindler’s List to get
made. I must say, though, I was really looking forward to seeing another sci-fi
film from The Beard in the short term. Hopefully Robopocalypse comes together sooner rather than later.

Here’s the official synopsis for Despicable Me 2:

In Summer 2013, get ready for more minion madness in Despicable Me 2. Chris Meledandri and his acclaimed filmmaking team create an all-new comedy animated adventure featuring the return of Gru (Steve Carell), the girls, the unpredictably hilarious minions…and a host of new and outrageously funny characters.

A few years back, Pixar was working on a
film called Newt. The premise was about the last remaining male
and female blue-footed newts on the planet who are forced together by science to
save the species, but they can’t stand each other. Sound familiar? The film
was scrapped after being too similar to Blue Sky Animation’s Rio. I think Pixar could have
done more with the premise, but I guess we’ll never know. The best we’ll
probably get are leaked pieces of concept art. We saw some back in 2010, and now more has been
released online. It’s a great look, but sadly, most concept art for 3D movies
tends to get watered down (remember how Tangled was supposed to resemble the artistic style of
French Rococo artist Jean-Honore
Fragonard’s painting “The Swing”?). Either way, it’s an
interesting look at a film that never was.

A new image from Warner Bros.’ new
iteration of Superman has been released online. Anticipation is running high
for director Zack Snyder’s Man of
Steel, and fans are eager to see if a new Supes franchise can
finally be kicked off right. This new image doesn’t reveal much other than the
fact that Henry Cavill is indeed a
handsome man and Snyder has settled on a very washed-out color scheme for the
film. The helicopters in this photo, though, coupled with the poster featuring
Superman in handcuffs have me highly intrigued as to how these circumstances fit
into the film’s overall plot. Hopefully more will be gleaned as we head closer
toward the film’s summer release date.
Via USA Today.
Here’s the official synopsis for Man of Steel:
Next summer, “Man of Steel” is coming to the big screen. The film is from director Zack Snyder and producers Charles Roven, Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer & Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics.
ABC Orders S.H.I.E.L.D. Pilot from Marvel; Joss Whedon Will Co-Write and
Possibly Direct

While Disney and Marvel’s The
Avengers has owned movie screens this year, ABC is looking to
bring the peacekeepers of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the small screen. The network
(owned by Disney) has greenlit a live-action pilot to showcase the Strategic
Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate (or is it the Strategic
Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division?). And who better to
co-write and possibly direct the pilot than the man behind The Avengers, Joss
Whedon himself. Whedon will of course be spearheading The
Avengers 2, as well as being involved with other features in
the Marvel universe. Hit the jump for much more on the first live-action
Marvel TV project to be greenlit. [Updated: We've added quotes from Whedon after the
jump.]
Deadline is reporting that the S.H.I.E.L.D
TV show is looking to jump right into production. Whedon will write the pilot
along with his brother Jed
Whedon and Maurissa
Tancharoen, a married couple who were both writers on Dollhouse, Spartacus and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Joss Whedon proved that he had the writing and
directing skills to handle The
Avengers feature film, but television
was his early bread and butter and it’ll be nice to have him back (if only for
the pilot).
No details about the pilot or series have
been released as of yet. Will we see Cobie
Smulders (How I Met Your Mother)
make a network jump and reprise her role in the new Marvel series? Will the
show be in canon with the movies? What time period
will they take place in? (I ask this last question because I’m curious if we
could ever see some Agent Coulson (Clark
Gregg) screen time.) And what about Nick Fury? Will the major heroes
and villains make appearances or will the series focus on some of the smaller
goodies and baddies who haven’t been introduced yet? As far as I’m concerned,
the sky’s the limit, and with Whedon on board, there’s a good chance we’ll get
to see an expansion of the Marvel universe on the small screen while we wait for
future features. (Excelsior!) Let us know what you think in the comments
below!
[Update: Last night, Whedon was moderating a Q&A
for Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk with
Me. According to Variety, Whedon "said the
storyline for the proposed series will be largely 'autonomous' from the Avengers sequel feature that is also in the
works," adding that it's not a spinoff.
Variety reporter Cynthia Littleton tweets
that Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen will be the showrunners, but Joss
assured the audience that he'll show up every now and then
"and take credit for everything."]

Rumor: New Batman Could Get His Start in JUSTICE LEAGUE by Summer 2015
Source: Batman on Film August 29, 2012
With the conclusion of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy, the future of DC Comics movies is
entirely up in the air right now. DC and Warner Bros’ next step in the gameplan
is Zack Snyder‘s Superman reboot Man of Steel, which must fight through the general disappointment
created by the last reboot, Superman Returns. That’s nothing compared to Green Lantern, which rode a 26% Rotten Tomatoes score to
squeak past $200 million worldwide. But hey, at least they have movies: Wonder
Woman and The Flash are left out in the cold, and Aquaman may only be a viable
superhero in the Hollywood fantasy of Entourage.
DC’s rival Marvel spent years carefully
assembling their stable of heroes, culminating in the smash success of The
Avengers. It seems DC is going to cut through the Gordian knot
and skip straight to Justice
League after Man of Steel, and use that to introduce the new
era of DC movies. More after the jump.
A source told Batman on Film that Justice
League will be the next DC picture after Man of
Steel, possibly lined up for Summer 2015.
As suits their interest, BOF noted that the new, rebooted Batman would be
introduced in Justice League before WB
started a new standalone Batman series.
One could hardly blame DC for using the movie as an opportunity to reboot Green Lantern. And since Snyder has implied
that his Superman has no explicit connection to Justice League, there is flexibility there as well.
Treat this all as rumor for now, in part
because all things Justice
League—including stories that
the likes of Ben Affleck or the Wachowskis might
direct—should be treated as rumor. Even if Warner Bros. know exactly what they
want to do with the DC heroes, they are waiting to make those intentions
public. We have confirmed that Gangster Squad
writer Will Beall is working on the Justice League
script, and Christopher Nolan does not want to be involved.
With that foundation, please feel free to take over the speculation in the
comments.
NATIONAL TREASURE Scribes Tapped to Rewrite UNCHARTED: DRAKE’S FORTUNE; Neil Burger No Longer Attached to Direct
Source: Variety August 23, 2012
Sony Pictures is moving forward with their
adaptation of the popular video game Uncharted: Drake’s
Fortune, as the project now has new writers. Variety reports that Marianne and Cormac
Wibberley (National Treasure) will
rewrite the script which was previously written by Neil Burger. The Ilusionist and Limitless director signed on to
write and direct Uncharted last summer, but
Variety now notes that he’s no longer involved with the project. He recently entered talks to direct the young
adult adaptation Divergent, so that may have had something to do with
his departure.
Uncharted has been in development for quite some time, and
before Burger was attached it was David O.
Russell that was planning on directing. Sony now
wants to wait until the Wibberleys finish their script before they start the
search for another director.
Wes Ball to Direct Adaptation of THE MAZE RUNNER for Fox

FAST AND FURIOUS 6 Stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Director Justin Lin Pose as Production Begins
Source: Deadline August 23, 2012
20th Century Fox has tapped newcomer
Wes Ball to direct an adaptation of
James Dashner’s dystopian novel
(aren’t they all?) The Maze Runner. Twilight helmer Catherine Hardwicke was previously attached to helm
the pic, but Deadline now reports that
Ball is onboard. The young adult book centers on a group of teenagers who wake
up to find themselves trapped in an ever-changing maze. Screenwriter Noah Oppenheim was tapped to pen the
adaptation last January, but it’s unknown if Ball’s take will necessitate a
rewrite.
Fox is apparently a big fan of Ball. His
animated short Ruin made waves earlier this year, and the studio hired him to develop a live-action feature film iteration of
the story for him to direct. He’s working on that script with T.S. Nowlin under the supervision of
producers McG and Lucasfilm’s
Steve Tzirlin. Ball runs the
animation/effects company Oddball Animation, but The Maze Runner will be live-action.

THE DARK TOWER Crumbles as Warner Bros. Passes
Source: Deadline August 21, 2012
It was a little more than two weeks ago
that we brought you the sobering news that Imagine’s adaptation of
Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series had a go/no-go deadline
looming. That deadline has now come and gone and it looks as if Warner Bros.
has passed. This comes as yet another setback to the project, which has seen
its share of woes: being let go by Universal, several budgetary concerns and difficulty landing a lead. The latest iteration
of the script from Akiva Goldsman
had Russell Crowe showing an
interest if the project were to be greenlit. Sadly, that did not happen at
Warner Bros. But there may yet be hope for Roland Deschain and
director/producer Ron Howard. Hit
the jump for more.
[Update: Deadline reports that Media Rights Capital is in
"serious talks" to finance the project, in part because MRC executive Modi
Wiczyk is apparently a big fan of the books. The
original story follows after the jump.]
Variety reports that, although Warner Bros. may
have passed, Imagine Entertainment
is free to shop the project around to other studios. Many believed that WB was
the best shot at so ambitious a project (the nine-volume series would have
encompassed three films and two TV series, the latter most likely being handled by HBO). This is an unfortunate
turn of events for
fans of the series and for fans of epic stories brought to the big screen. A
project this ambitious carries a high risk with no guaranteed reward, an
equation that no major studio (or business, for that matter) seems willing to
chance these days.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with
The Dark Tower storyline (I’d suggest
reading the books, since it doesn’t look like this will be coming to big or
small screens any time soon), here’s a synopsis of the first book (via Amazon):
The Gunslinger introduces Roland Deschain of Gilead, of In-World that was, as he pursues his enigmatic antagonist to the mountains that separate the desert from the Western Sea. Roland is a solitary figure, perhaps accursed, who with a strange singlemindedness traverses an exhausted, almost timeless landscape. The people he encounters are left behind, or worse—left dead. At a way station, however, he meets Jake, a boy from a particular time (1977) and a particular place (New York City), and soon the two are joined—khef, ka, and ka-tet. The mountains lie before them. So does the man in black and, somewhere far beyond…the Dark Tower.

BLOODSTRIKE
Source: Variety August 21, 2012
Bloodstrike was a top-secret, super-powered assassination squad deployed covertly by the United States government. All of the members had already died before becoming members of the team; they were brought back to life by the government’s Project: Born Again…
The main character and team leader was Cabbot Stone (brother of ex-Youngblood member and Brigade member Battlestone). Other members were the four-armed Fourplay, the ex-villain Deadlock, the power-armored Shogun, and the enigmatic Tag, who could force people to “freeze in place” by touching them. The computer in charge of teleporting the team was named Roam. It had to re-charge its cells after each transport. In the first issue, the team is sent to a G.A.T.E. (Genetic and Technological Engineering) facility and battle and kill Commander Corben, who hired them to prove his facility is worthy. [Wikipedia]
Paramount Courting Tom Hardy for Jack Ryan Spinoff WITHOUT REMORSE; Kevin
Costner Accepts Offer to Play CIA Liason in Both Movies
Source: Deadline August 21, 2012
Paramount has been trying to reboot the Jack Ryan franchise for years now. The studio is finally beginning to make real
progress—not only on the Jack Ryan movie starring Chris Pine,
but also on the spinoff Without
Remorse. The key was locking up Kenneth Branagh
to direct and play the villain in the former. Kevin
Costner has now accepted the offer to star in both films as the CIA liason for Jack
Ryan and Without Remorse lead character John Clark.
Christopher McQuarrie (Valkyrie) is in talks to write and direct Without Remorse, but it’s this
next bit of news that will excite the legions of This Means
War fans out there: Deadline reports that Paramount is courting
Tom Hardy to play John Clark. More after the jump.
This Means War digs aside, Paramount would be wise and
lucky to anchor its spy franchise with Pine and Hardy, two of the handsomest
young charmers in Hollywood. The report does not address Hardy’s interest
level, so we’ll have to check back to see if the actor wants the part as much as
I want him to take it.
Deadline describes Costner’s character as “William Harper, a true blue
American idealist who recruits and mentors both Ryan and John Kelly, the latter
of whom becomes the CIA operative Clark by the end of Without
Remorse.” The deal reportedly includes an option for Costner to headline
his own film in addition to his supporting role in the Jack Ryan movie and
Without Remorse.
Essentially, if audiences are ready to invite Jack Ryan back into their
lives, Paramount is ready to capitalize on the demand. I hope you too see the
appeal in an Avengers-style franchise targeted toward
adults.
The synopsis for Tom Clancy‘s Without Remorse sheds
some light on the relationship between Jack Ryan and John Clark.
Avid readers of Clancy’s bestselling techno-thrillers (The Hunt for Red October et al.) know agent John Kelly, code-named Mr. Clark, as Jack Ryan’s “dark side.” Here, in 1970, Vietnam vet Kelly gets involved in a secret operation to rescue 20 American pilots from a North Vietnamese prison camp. Betrayed by someone in Washington, the mission ends in apparent failure. Clancy balances the military movements with a dark narrative of Kelly’s tragic personal life. While mourning the death of his pregnant wife in a traffic accident, Kelly picks up a young hitchhiker named Pam, a prostitute and drug “mule” fleeing her cruel masters. The pair fall in love and set out to bring down the drug lords, but an error on Kelly’s part leads to Pam’s horrible demise at the hands of the vengeful criminals. After his own recovery from a shotgun blast, Kelly begins methodically to murder his way through the drug ring. [Amazon]
Jim Carrey in talks to join Kick-Ass 2
Source: Collider August 21, 2012
Universal reportedly wants Jim Carrey to join the ass kicking in
director Jeff Wadlow’s Kick-Ass 2. The sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s 2010 original film adaptation of the
Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. comic already features returning cast
members Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz,
Nicolas Cage and Christopher
Mintz-Plasse. Carrey is being sought to play the role of Colonel
Stars, a founding member of Justice Forever who recruits heroes to the crime
fighting group. Deadline reports that, though Carrey is a fan of Vaughn’s
original film, no deals are in place yet.

Some shakeups in the animation industry are
taking place. We recently learned that Paramount Pictures was ramping up its own animation
division with a SpongeBob SquarePants sequel, an animated J.J. Abrams film, and adaptations of
Nickelodeon shows like Dora
the Explorer and The Legend of Korra. Since 2006, Paramount has
handled the distribution of DreamWorks Animation’s output, but their deal is
nearing a close at the end of this year.
DWA made it known that they would be
seeking a deal with a different studio after Paramount requested a higher fee
for bot theatrical and home video
releases, and now it looks like the Shrek studio has found a new home in 20th
Century Fox. Hit the jump for more.
Per Deadline, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s DreamWorks Animation was
apparently looking at Sony Pictures as a possible distribution partner in the
last few weeks, but a deal never materialized and DWA then turned to Fox. This
new deal will begin in 2013 and lasts for five years, through 2017. 20th
Century Fox owns Blue Sky Studios, the animation company behind the Ice Age films and
Rio, but I’m
not business savvy enough to conjecture how this deal affects Fox’s distribution
of those animated films. DWA previously paid Paramount a 9%, but the fee
negotiated for Fox has yet to be disclosed.

Bruce
Campbell’s role in Sam
Raimi’s original film The Evil Dead was career-defining, so how does
Campbell feel about the current remake by director Fede Alvarez? Luckily, the man behind the famous chin
had nothing but good things to say about the film. He also talked about what
fans could expect, differences between the remake and the original and whether
or not he would be making a cameo appearance.
The Evil
Dead remake, starring Jane Levy, Jessica Lucas, Shiloh Fernandez,
Elizabeth Blackmore and Lou Taylor
Pucci, debuts April 12th of next year. Hit the jump to see what
Campbell had to say.
Campbell recently spoke to Digital Spy (via CBM) about The Evil Dead remake. We only knew snippets of the plot
before, so here’s a recap: Levy plays the main character, who is going through
drug withdrawal. Lucas plays a nurse, while Blackmore will play the fiancée of
Fernandez’s character and a newcomer to the group of five friends who hole up in
a cabin in the woods. So how different will the remake be from the original? As
Campbell puts it:
“There’s none of the original characters. We didn’t want to compare apples with apples. It’s a contemporary movie – just like Evil Dead was contemporary in 1979, this is contemporary for young adults now. It’s basically five new kids who are going to have a really bad night with a brand new director – Fede Alvarez, who was handpicked by Sam Raimi. I’ve seen it already; I think it’s definitely fabulous.”
Campbell is also tuned in to the rabid
fanbase that has kept The Evil Dead in the
conversation all these years. Here’s what he has to say about being loyal to
the fanbase:
“We’re really excited and really behind it, [but] it’s going to take a bit to get the Evil Dead fans behind it. We know we’ve pissed a lot of them off. We appreciate that and we appreciate their anger and their zeal, but the only thing we want to impress upon them is that we didn’t screw it up. This is going to be just as memorable as [the original] Evil Dead without being the same movie”
Campbell also commented on the current spate of
remakes and reboots:
“You don’t want to remake something shot-for-shot. I can’t believe they remade Psycho – what the hell kind of a waste of celluloid is that? It’s a creative medium.“The nice thing is the film looks beautiful. The effects are 10 times better than we ever had access to and the actors are all better than we were in 1979. Though granted Sam Raimi is a mad genius, so we got a crazy result like Evil Dead out of this amateur enthusiasm sort of thing.”
Finally, Campbell fielded the question on
whether or not he’ll be making a cameo or ever starring as Ash in a future
remake:
“I’m not at liberty to discuss that. But the thing is we want it to be a standalone movie. You’re going to have some references [to the original] in there and there’s going to be things the fans will enjoy as far as familiar aspects, but it’s a whole new ball game.”“I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know if I could – the last one was 1991. I was a virile young man; I’m 54 years old now so I’m not sure 54-year-old guys need to be doing that s**t anymore. But if Sam wants to lace the boots back on and do something that makes sense, that’s fine. We may need to do the movie one day, if our careers fly off the tracks and we crash and burn, we might look at each other and go ‘Let’s make an Evil Dead movie’!”
Be sure to head over to Digital Spy for the full
interview and keep an eye here for more news on The Evil Dead remake now that it’s wrapped production.
'Daredevil' falling back to Marvel
No extension for Fox; Carnahan's take 'up in smoke"
Source: Variety August 14, 2012
With its extention request rejected, 20th Century Fox will have no choice but to allow the rights to "Daredevil" to go back to Marvel, marking the second major character to revert back to the superhero
shingle since Disney bought it in 2009.
Under the current terms of the agreement, Fox has to put the pic into production by Oct. 10. But late Monday night, Joe Carnahan, Fox's pick to direct the film, implied that the actioner wasn't happening at the studio. "Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids," Carnahan tweeted, followed by "We shall see. Time is NOT on anyone's side."Marvel will regain control of the character sometime after the October deadline passes, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. The Punisher, which had been at Lionsgate, marked the first character to revert to Marvel since its sale to Disney, which cannot exploit characters like Spider-Man, Venom, Ghost Rider, the X-Men, Wolverine, Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, Elektra and Deadpool. Rights-holding studios that can prove films are in active development retain those rights in perpetuity. Marvel began fully financing its own slate of projects in 2005, beginning with "The Incredible Hulk" and "Iron Man." Before that, Marvel licensed its characters out to other studios, with vampire hunter Blade the first to get the bigscreen treatment by New Line in 1998.
Marvel licensed Spider-Man to Sony in 1999, while Thor had once been set up at Sony before Paramount picked up the rights in 2006.

Concept Art for the Canceled Sandman Movie
Source: SuperHeroHype August 14, 2012
Neil Gaiman's Sandman has been one of the most celebrated comics of the past twenty-five years and it's journey to the big screen has been a tough one. Earlier today Neil himself tweeted this message: Some years ago, I had to pitch/explain SANDMAN to Warners. Jill thompson illustrated the pitch. That art's for sale.
If you're versed in the Sandman mythology and have a keen eye you'll be able to tell that this concept art covers the entire run of the comic. Now if this was for one film, a series of films, or made simply to explain the title in the pitch is left to be known but it's still really cool. So not only can you see first hand the concept art for the Sandman movie but you can also own it.
Kristen Stewart Dropped from 'Snow White' Sequel Plans
Source: The Hollywood Reporter August 14, 2012
Universal has decided to shelve its planned Snow White and the Huntsman sequel and is instead focusing on a solo Huntsman movie starring Chris Hemsworth. Kristen Stewart will not be invited to return if the follow-up goes forward.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the sequel to June's Snow White, which starred Stewart, Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, is being reconceived as a spinoff movie. It's unclear whether director Rupert Sanders will return, although one source with ties to the production says he will. However, screenwriter David Koepp, who had been hired to pen the continuation of the original film, is being settled out of his rich contract, according to sources, as the project is being transformed into something other than the movie that Koepp had been hired to write.
"The studio is currently exploring options to continue the franchise," a Universal spokeswoman says.
The move comes in the wake of Stewart, 22, and the married Sanders, 41, apologizing publicly for a romantic affair after compromising photos of the duo were published in July. (Stewart was dating her Twilight co-start Robert Pattinson.) While it might have been awkward for Stewart and Sanders to reunite for a sequel, it is not clear why the decision to move forward without Stewart was made. Universal did not respond to a request for comment.
It is highly unusual for Hollywood studios to drop stars of franchises between the first and second installments. The original plan, according to sources, was to make two films featuring the Snow White character and a third film spinning off the Huntsman, similar to how Fox's X-Men series has spun off Wolverine.
But it's far from clear whether a Snow White follow-up will ever get made. The movie was a modest hit for Universal, grossing $389.2 million worldwide on a budget of about $170 million. But Stewart, one of Hollywood's top stars thanks to the Twilight franchise, commands
Universal currently is looking for a new writer and insiders hope to start filming next July when Hemsworth, who also stars in Marvel's Thor series, becomes available.
Cast for MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Includes One-Time Wonder Woman Megan Gale
Source: Collider August 14, 2012
Once cast as the Amazon warrior princess
Wonder Woman in what was to be George
Miller’s failed Justice League film, Megan Gale will finally get to team up with the
director in Mad Max: Fury
Road. Her role is unspecified at the moment, but we do have
character names for a host of other roles, including that of Hugh Keays-Byrne, who was tapped to star as the Martian
Manhunter alongside Gale. Mad Max: Fury Road
features Tom Hardy in the
title role along with Charlize Theron
as Furiosa. Hit the jump for more casting info.
Here’s more casting news courtesy of Movie Hole (via CBM):

- Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) as Nux
- Hugh Keays-Byrne (Mad Max) as Immortan Joe

Saints), Angus Sampson (Insidious), Gillian Jones (Packed
to the Rafters), Richard
Carter (Happy Feet), Joy Smithers (Home & Away), Melissa Jaffer (Farscape) and Melita
Jurisic (Something in the
Air).
Here’s the synopsis for Mad Max: Fury Road:
“Mad Max Fury Road” sees Mad Max (Hardy) caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the imperator Furiosa (Theron). A battle erupts on the road in front of them over the course of the film as they attempt to push the rig to safer terrain.
Joe Carnahan Says His DAREDEVIL Pitch “Went Up in Smoke”
Source: Collider August 14, 2012
Source: Collider August 14, 2012
Last week, we reported the exciting news
that Fox was looking at director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) to reboot Daredevil. The studio needs to get a reboot of
the Man without Fear into theaters by
October 10th or else the rights for the character will revert to Marvel
Studios. There was even word that Fox, in order to hold onto the rights a
little longer, was willing to make a trade with Marvel. This report was later denied, and we learned that
Fox was still lukewarm on rebooting Daredevil. Carnahan was still involved, but now that may
have changed as well.
I’m a big fan of Carnahan’s movies, and I
was excited to hear his name attached to a reboot of Daredevil. However, he tweeted some disappointing news
earlier today:
Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids.We shall see. Time is NOT on anyone’s side.
It’s doubtful Carnahan is still attached
after saying that the studio wasn’t interested in his pitch, which is
unfortunate because I bet Carnahan would bring a fresh take for the character.
Daredevil needs a push in order to be more than the Marvel Universe’s version of
Batman. Honestly, what is Daredevil’s superpower? He’s blind, but he can see.
He’s also got batons, which are easily one of the weirdest weapons a hero has
ever wielded.
With less than two months to go until Daredevil would have to go into production,
it’s looking highly unlikely that Fox will hold on to the rights.
Nicolas Cage Attached to THE EXPENDABLES 3; Producer Avi Lerner Also Trying to
Get Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, and Wesley Snipes
Source: Collider August 13, 2012
I haven’t seen The Expendables
2 yet, but the biggest selling point for the sequel and the
original is the cast. If you were an action movie star, then The Expendables franchise wants you to pick up a gun and
blow shit up. According to Producer Avi
Lerner, they’ve already got Nicolas
Cage signed up to do just that in The Expendables 3. It’s worth
noting that The Expendables 3 isn’t a done
deal. Lionsgate hasn’t given the third film a greenlight, but the studio will
most likely continue the franchise if the upcoming sequel dominates the box office
this weekend (and it probably will).
Cage is the latest addition to the cast
(all of which are slated to return, according to Lerner), but he may not be the
only big name to join the series. Hit the jump for more.
Speaking to Total Film, Lerner says he’s got
big plans for The Expendables 3
casting:
We’ve approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys, we’ve got a character in mind for him. We’re talking to Harrison Ford. [And we want] Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison. I’ll give you one more name, we’ve got Nicolas Cage to play [one of the characters].”“And we’re going to bring Mickey Rourke back, if he won’t be too crazy. I like Mickey. And of course, all the existing stars [will return]”
Eastwood seems like an unlikely draw. He
had previously retired from acting after Gran Torino, but was persuaded to
return to help longtime associate director Robert Lorenz‘ feature debut, Trouble with the
Curve. As for Ford, it’s possible since he’s been willing to
take on a supporting role in recent years (although this would be a considerably
larger ensemble), and I love the comment about “Snipes when he comes back from
prison.” Snipes is due for release on July 19, 2013, so they’ll have to figure
that into their schedule if the actor says yes and the third film is a go.
Hugh Jackman Confirms THE WOLVERINE Is a Standalone Story and “Won’t Be
Overloaded with Mutants”
Source: Collider August 13, 2012
X-Men Origins: Wolverine should be wiped from history
and all copies of it should be buried next to the Atari E.T.
landfill. The filmmakers behind the sequel, The Wolverine, probably aren’t
willing to go that far, but they seem to agree that it’s best to leave Origins in the past and let their new film
stand on its own. Hugh Jackman has now confirmed earlier reports on how
The Wolverine will stand apart from the
awful 2009 spin-off. The film also stars
Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal
Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, and Rila
Fukushima. The Wolverine opens July 26, 2013.
Speaking to Total Film [via the Coventry Telegraph], Jackman
says:
“We’ve deliberately not called it Wolverine 2 because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture.”“With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it’s going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic.”“The approach to character means we won’t be overloaded with mutants and teams and the like, so it’ll be more character-based. I think in many ways it will feel like a completely different X-Men film.”
Wolverine is an odd character since he’s a
lone wolf who’s always drawn into a team dynamic (he’s practically their leader
in the first X-Men). It’s looking like The Wolverine will go back to the loner side of the
character when it comes to fighting against bad guys. It’s a fresh take when it
comes to the movies, and
I’m eager to see what director James
Mangold will do with it.
Zack Snyder Confirms MAN OF STEEL Won’t Use John Williams’ Music; Says Film Asks
‘What Would You Do if You Were Superman?’
Source: Collider August 13, 2012
Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of
Steel has been a giant question mark for fans for quite some
time. We finally got our look at the first footage from the film at Comic-Con, and the general
public was treated to a significantly truncated version of that footage by way
of the film’s first teaser trailer. Noticeably absent were
Snyder’s trademark slow motion and stylized camera
movements, instead replaced by a grittiness and real world grounding reminiscent
of one Christopher Nolan (which
isn’t exactly a surprise given that Nolan is Man
of Steel’s producer).
At Comic-Con, the closest Snyder came to saying something of substance about the
film was when he explained that they wanted to get away from Superman being “a
big blue boy scout” and instead wanted to see him beat the snot out of people.
Speaking with Total Film magazine (via The Geek Files and CBM), Snyder elaborate on this
point:
“The big challenge is if you can make people feel ‘What would you do if you were Superman?’ That’s what we went out to do as far as we could. Superman’s always been this kind of big blue boy-scout up on a throne that nobody can really touch, so we tried to make him relatable.”
Speaking more about his approach to the
character, Snyder said they wanted to start from scratch:
“We decided to act as if no Superman film had been made – even though we love the films that have been made… Superman is a big responsibility but I felt he needed to be reintroduced to a generation and I thought this was a great opportunity.”
Bryan Singer and composer John
Ottoman famously incorporated John Williams’ theme from the classic Superman films into Superman Returns, but the 2006
pic was essentially a sequel to Superman
II and not a reboot of the character. In pretending like no other Superman
films have been made before, it makes sense that Snyder and composer Hans Zimmer would need to move away from
Williams’ work:
“We had to say this is a Superman movie for the first time and you can’t then go ‘Oh, now let’s steal a little music’… So, yes it’s awesome music but Hans Zimmer is going to do something awesome.”
Keira Knightley is Jack Ryan's female lead.

Keira Knightley has secured the female lead in Kenneth Branagh's still-untitled Jack Ryan thriller. The Hollywood Reporter has the story, indicating that Knightley will join Chris Pine, Kevin Costner and Branagh himself in the cast.
Pine will play the Tom Clancy character, which has previously appeared in the novel-to-screen adaptations The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears.
Knightley, best known for her role in the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, recently appeared opposite Steve Carell in Seeking a Friend and the End of the World.

Marvel and Fox to exchange Superhero Characters?
Source: Variety August 10, 2012
Reports are that Marvel has made a proposition to Fox. They will extend the looming Daredevil deadline in exchange for Fantanstic Four characters. Not the Fantastic Four themselves, but some of their supporting characters. The biggest names being the Silve Surfer and Galactus. I thought the Silver Surfer in the second FF movie was pretty badass (Galactus on the other hand, was a let down).
Variety reports :
As a film/comic book guru, I think this deal is pretty one-sided. Daredevil is a cool character, but we saw what Fox did in their first attempt at the character. Once upon a time, the Silver Surfer was the highlight of the FF movie, and was even rumored to get a movie of his own. I personally believe Fox will either rush a Daredevil movie, or let the right switch back to Marvel.Fox is in discussions with Joe Carnahan to direct what’s been described as a “Frank Miller-esque, hardcore 70s thriller” take on blind Hell’s Kitchen superhero Matt Murdock — a vision that would deviate from Disney/Marvel’s family-friendly tone. Carnahan has yet to receive an official offer, though multiple sources tell Variety that he’s the choice.Fox needs to start lensing by Oct. 10 or Marvel gets the Daredevil character back. Fox is said to be high on Carnahan’s take, but making that deadline would be nearly impossible; one solution the companies are discussing is a co-financing arrangement. But Fox also has something Marvel wants: According to sources close to the project, marvel wants the use of characters from the “Fantastic Four” universe in future Marvel pics, including the giant, world-devouring supervillain Galactus, rumored to play a key role in future Marvel pics, and his messenger the Silver Surfer, who makes a deal in the comicbooks to serve as Galactus’ messenger to save his home planet. Fox owns rights to both as part of its deal for “Fantastic Four,” which the studio is also rebooting with “Chronicle” helmer Josh Trank. Insiders say Fox wouldn’t be willing to part with those characters.Talks are expected to resume later this week. Reps from Fox, Marvel and Carnahan would not comment on the dealings.
*I think Fox should have to give the rights to Spider-Man back to Marvel so we can see him in Avengers 2. Anyone want to start a petition?
ENDER’S GAME to be Released in IMAX
Source: Collider August 10, 2012
For a project that has the epic scope of Ender’s Game, it’s only fitting that the film be released in IMAX. Fans can look forward to seeing the adaptation of the beloved Orson Scott Card novel in IMAX format when it debuts in theaters November 1st, 2013. The sci-fi film from director Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) follows Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a boy trained at a military battle school in the hopes that he’ll develop a strategy to defeat the alien menace known as the Formics. This will make two big features for Lionsgate being released in the same month (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire releases November 22nd), two properties the studio hopes will continue to bear box-office fruit. But before Catching Fire can sweep Ender’s Game aside, the sci-fi film will have three weeks to build up a big payday and, hopefully, a bigger following. Hit the jump for more updates on Ender’s Game from the film’s production blog.
Avengers 2 in May 2015?
Source: SuperHeroHype
August 10, 2012
No official word on this one, as MTV simply sources 'several industry insiders,' but the mumblings have begun that The Avengers 2 will hit theaters on May 1st, 2015.
With Joss having just signed his exclusive TV and film contract with Marvel, it would make sense for the film to be released around that time, and as an insider told MTV: Marvel has a very set agenda of what they want to do, they are already kind of ahead of the game [on the sequel] because they've got the guy that did it before doing it again and something tells me Joss already has the template [for the film].
